If you’re expecting a baby in Scarborough, South Portland, Cape Elizabeth, Saco or the surrounding Southern Maine area, one of the most common questions I get is — when should I book my newborn photographer?
The short answer: earlier than you think.
Booking During Pregnancy
Most families book their newborn session during their second trimester. This allows me to reserve space around your due date, since I only take a limited number of newborn sessions each month.
Instead of choosing a fixed date, I pencil in your due date and adjust once baby arrives. This keeps everything flexible while still making sure you have a spot.
When the Session Actually Happens
Newborn sessions are typically photographed within the first 5–10 days after birth. This is when babies are sleepiest and naturally curl into those soft, cozy poses.
That said, I’ve worked with older newborns as well — up to 6 weeks. Sessions can look a little different at that stage, but we can still create beautiful, meaningful images.
Planning Ahead for Maternity + Newborn
Many families don’t realize that booking your newborn session early also opens the door for maternity photos.
I offer simple maternity sessions — either in studio or outdoors — that can be added on when you reserve your newborn session. Some families choose to bundle sessions together, which allows for more flexibility and package savings while documenting the full journey into motherhood.
There’s no pressure to decide everything at once, but it’s something we can easily plan together if it feels right for you.
What If You Wait Too Long?
I completely understand wanting to wait until baby arrives — but many photographers in Southern Maine book out weeks (or even months) in advance.
Waiting can mean:
- Limited availability
- Less flexibility with scheduling
- Missing that early newborn window
Booking ahead simply gives you peace of mind.
A Calm, Baby-Led Experience
Every newborn session in my Scarborough studio is guided by your baby. Some babies are sleepy, some are more alert, and some need a little extra time — and that’s completely okay.
My space is warm, quiet, and designed to allow for a relaxed, baby-led experience without feeling rushed.
